LinkedIn and Your Career

I was talking to one of my colleagues today about the need to be on LinkedIn.  I compared it to "googling" a retail establishment prior to making a visit decision.  If an organization does not have a website, it is almost as if they don't exist.  To LinkedIn's credit, it seems as if this has become true for people too.

Susan Adams writes for Forbes:
Now that LinkedIn is 12 years old and has more than 300 million members, most professionals have figured out how to set up a profile and build connections. But with ever-increasing numbers of hiring managers and recruiters using the site to hunt for job candidates and potential employers routinely checking LinkedIn before they make hiring decisions…
She goes on to describe Seven Ways to Make LinkedIn Help You Find a Job.

You use WHAT for your job search?

Most of us probably believe that most online job searches involve LinkedIn more than any other social networking site, right?

Wrong!

Per Susan Adam at Forbes...
I thought most job seekers were using LinkedIn, not Facebook, to find work. But according to the survey, 83% of people looking for a job say they use Facebook in their social media search, compared to 36% who use LinkedIn which, to my surprise, is the most infrequently used site among job seekers.
To receive the Jobvite 2015 Job Seeker Trends Survey, you will need to provide information on this website.

The good news..?  The survey states that "the percentage of Job seekers who’ve said it is “harder” to find a job has decreased by 43% since 2012."

Student Branding Blog: "Help! My College Doesn’t Have a Career Center!"

Take a look at my latest article on Dan Schawbel's Student Branding Blog and learn what you can do if you are a college student without a career center.
It is the stuff of a career horror tale.  You attend a small college without a career center.  Employers do not visit your campus to recruit.  It is mid-October, and you graduate in May with a substantial amount of student loan debt.  Do not fear! This tale of woe is not insurmountable.  The web is full of career technology that can act as a career center surrogate.

Facebook Versus LinkedIn: The Debate Continues

For those of us in the recruiting or career profession, the Facebook versus LinkedIn debate is a fascinating one.  On one hand, some believe LinkedIn to be THE professional networking tool.  This group generally reserves Facebook for personal use and tends to believe that job searching on Facebook involves a certain degree of risk as far as one's reputation is concerned.  Facebook-centered job search applications like BeKnown and BranchOut are also met with suspicion.

On the other hand, there is a group that is open to Facebook job searching.  College students and younger professionals often don't feel as if they have a "professional network."  Most are already on Facebook and feel that they benefit most making job connections with the existing network of friends and family.  There are still others who feel that they have closer relationships with their Facebook contacts and that they are more likely to be of assistance in a job search.

We still don't know how this will come out in the proverbial "wash" although there are no shortage of opinions on the issue.  One such opinion is written by Jody Ordioni for ere.net and is entitled Why Facebook Will Destroy LinkedIn.  Take a moment to read it, and let us know what you think.

LinkedIn Adds Sections for Students

Students and new college grads don't always feel comfortable on LinkedIn.  Thus, the company is addressing this issue by adding profile sections that are applicable to younger adults.  The new sections are:

  • Honors & Awards
  • Organizations

Using LinkedIn

LinkedIn is an invaluable tool for job seekers and those who enjoy making professional connections.  However, you don't want to just load it and leave it.   You must maintain your profile at a minimum and participating in groups is advisable.  Even if you are not job searching, you stand to learn a lot from your colleagues.

Sound advice "Cynical Girl" style

Laurie Ruettimann is somewhat of a celebrity in the HR world and runs the Cynical Girl blog.  She recently attended the SHRM conference in Las Vegas and had the opportunity to rub elbows with representatives from Facebook-based apps like BranchOut and BeKnown.  Her advice to you is:
...it’s awesome to go on the internet and look for a job — and I applaud job boards for expanding into the world of social networking — but if a company can hire you without spending a dime with BranchOut or Monster or LinkedIn, it will...Go ahead and get a profile on BeKnown, LinkedIn, and Branchout — and then get off the flippin’ computer and get yourself to industry association meetings, Rotary Club meetings, and alumni mixers. Volunteer your time. That’s the way to get hired in America — and throughout the global economy.  Read more...

I would say that is some pretty good advice. Thanks Laurie!

About your LinkedIn photo...

What type of photo are you using for LinkedIn?  Is it a clear head shot, or does the viewer have to squint to see you?  Are you one of many people in the photo?  Is the photo professional or gimmicky?

Monster responds to LinkedIn

LinkedIn shut down API access to BeKnown (Monster's new career platform in Facebook) this week.  Here is Monster's reaction:
We are disappointed by this decision. Why? It’s not good for LinkedIn users: blocking the API effectively limits LinkedIn members’ ability to import their own profile data or invite their own connections to another environment, whether BeKnown or others.  Read more...

Social Media Battlefield in Career Space

There's an interesting environment developing in the online career space.  Startups are flocking to the Facebook, presumably in an attempt to be a LinkedIn-type presence within Facebook.  But, since a number of these apps can pull your information from LinkedIn (with your permission of course), LinkedIn has pulled their plug.

LinkedIn Faux Pas

Jessica Simko at CareerRealism writes about LinkedIn groups in her article LinkedIn Strategies that Keep You Unemployed:
When I read through the content in these groups, I am often shocked at what some people are saying, on a public website, that many employers use to find candidates for their open positions.
She continues to describe the various mistakes that job candidates are making in their group interactions, and she is right on target.  Take a moment to read the article so you don't make the same mistakes.

Social Media Predictions For Recruiting

Matt Kaiser writes the following predictions in his article SHRM 11 Spotlight: Reinventing Recruiting:
If you still think social media is a fad in recruitment, here are some predictions to ponder:

  • Resumes will become obsolete. Your resume will be your “personal brand,” accessed online through sites like LinkedIn, Facebook and YouTube (Video Resumes).
  • Everyone around the globe will have a Facebook profile – and instead of Googling a good restaurant or hotel, you’ll just ask your Facebook network.
  • Metrics will become obsolete – because you will source your own social networks for candidates.
I couldn't agree more.  Companies are getting into the same online space as job seekers.  Therefore, these predictions are simply common sense projections.  So, if you are hesitant about social media, it is time to get over your hesitations, build or clean up your online image, and get with the times before they leave you behind.

Social media and the changing job search landscape...

Someone once said that the only constant is change, and the social media environment seems to be changing almost daily along with usage stats.

On June 16th, Career Conduit addressed job searching via Facebook, particularly BranchOut, in the post Branching out from LinkedIn.   As if on cue, according to a June 19th Inside Facebook release, BranchOut grew its monthly active user count from 32,897 to 817,367 in a week.  Apparently there is a desire to network / job search on the Facebook platform.

Today we entertain additional considerations.  As Facebook is enlarging its plaform to encourage ecommerce, how will this affect the job search?  Will more companies tend to recruit where they do business?  Furthermore, a trend is appearing in mobile.  An increasing number of web users are now accessing the web through their mobile devices.  Techcrunch cites a recent report by mobile app analytics firm Flurry:
...daily time spent in mobile apps has now surpassed web consumption. The average user now spends 9% more time using mobile apps than the Internet. In June users spent an average of 81 minutes daily on mobile apps, compared to 74 minutes on the web.
Weigh in here on how these changes affect the way that job seekers might conduct their job hunt in the future.  Do you see Facebook becoming as much or more useful than LinkedIn in this regard?

Branching out from LinkedIn...

There are two assumptions that we should address in regard to using social media in the job search:
  1. Not all job seekers feel as if they have an adequate professional network or work experience for LinkedIn.
  2. Utilizing a Facebook job app in the job search is not necessarily detrimental.

Survey says..!!!

LinkedIn is number one according to a study by ROI Research Inc.
According to the survey of 2,997 active social networkers, 59 percent of respondents said it is important to have a LinkedIn account, more than any other social network...
“We may not necessarily be in a double-dip recession but, individuals have embraced social networking as a means to actively manage their personal visibility in the global economy.” said Daina Middleton, CEO of Performics.
