Hiring According to SHRM

The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) is predicting a decrease in hiring this month.

For the third consecutive month, hiring activity will decrease and job cuts will rise in the manufacturing and service sectors compared with a year earlier, according to the Society for Human Resource Management’s (SHRM) Leading Indicators of National Employment (LINE) survey for January 2012.

In addition, the report illuminates the unemployment rate:

Basically, the U.S. job market is in a holding pattern, creating roughly enough jobs each month to account for the increase in Americans in the job pool, such as through population growth. And the official unemployment rate masks some underlying issues: Many people are working part time despite wanting full-time jobs, and some unemployed people have stopped trying to find a job.

College students..! Are you prepared for a job search?

I have some good news for you. Although the economy has taken a swift kick in the gut pretty much globally, students are fortunate to still have opportunities as most companies are looking toward the future and building their bench strength through college recruiting.

This good news is not without a caveat. Students must put a tremendous amount of effort into preparation. Thus, the most crucial advice that I can give students right now is to get to your career center - pronto! While there are opportunities for you, you must be competitive to secure a job / internship. This is a buyer's market. Companies have many students (and recent grads) to choose from. So, you must rise to the top of the candidate field, and you don't have to do it alone.

University career centers exist to help students in the job search and interview preparation. They are also the hub for recruiting activity. If you are serious about searching for an internship or job, this is the first place that you need to go. Your career center can help you:

Uncover your skills and interests
Demystify the world of work
Discover where you fit given your unique qualities
Prepare resumes and cover letters
Learn proper business dress, etiquette, etc...
Gain important interview skills
Network to build contacts and uncover opportunities

The value of the career center staff should not be underestimated. They are looking out for you. Your success is their own.

Early fall is the best time to seek assistance. Companies generally schedule information sessions in September and October. The career center can tell you who is coming to campus and how to best take advantage of this opportunity. Companies also typically open full time university pipeline type positions from August to October for application and schedule applicants to interview in the fall. They do the same for internships, generally beginning in November and running through late winter / early spring.

If you wait until the spring to prepare and engage, you will have missed important opportunities! More importantly, you will most likely find yourself outside the opportunities that companies provide for college students.

So, what should you do? Look up your career center's phone number or email address and make an appointment right away! Tell them that Career Conduit sent you.

Facebook Versus LinkedIn: The Debate Continues

For those of us in the recruiting or career profession, the Facebook versus LinkedIn debate is a fascinating one. On one hand, some believe LinkedIn to be THE professional networking tool. This group generally reserves Facebook for personal use and tends to believe that job searching on Facebook involves a certain degree of risk as far as one's reputation is concerned. Facebook-centered job search applications like BeKnown and BranchOut are also met with suspicion.

On the other hand, there is a group that is open to Facebook job searching. College students and younger professionals often don't feel as if they have a "professional network." Most are already on Facebook and feel that they benefit most making job connections with the existing network of friends and family. There are still others who feel that they have closer relationships with their Facebook contacts and that they are more likely to be of assistance in a job search.

We still don't know how this will come out in the proverbial "wash" although there are no shortage of opinions on the issue. One such opinion is written by Jody Ordioni for ere.net and is entitled Why Facebook Will Destroy LinkedIn. Take a moment to read it, and let us know what you think.

Is the job report really good news?

Reuters is reporting that "U.S. job growth accelerated more than expected in July as private employers stepped up hiring, easing fears the economy was sliding into a fresh recession." But, should we get excited about what appears to be positive job news? Not really, according to Jeff Cox of CNBC. He writes the following in his article Beneath Jobs Report Surface Lies Some Ugly Truths:

...the drop in the unemployment rate is fairly illusory—stick all those people [discouraged workers] back in the workforce and you wipe out the job creation and the drop in unemployment.

And the so-called “real” unemployment rate, which adds in discouraged workers and others not counted as part of the headline unemployment rate, actually pulled back one notch to 16.1 percent.

Hats off to Heather Huhman! She puts her finger right on a problem that some interviewers face - themselves! The problem is that they either don't know this or are in complete denial.

Managing your career works! The difference between you and similarly qualified candidate may boil down to to preparedness. You must have a polished resume, a customized cover letter, and a professional appearance and demeanor. You should have your elevator speech so polished that it just automatically rolls off your tongue with sincerity. You should have carefully researched the company and the industry. Finally, you should know how to interview and have practiced potential interview questions.

College career centers employ career experts to assist students in preparing for their careers. The really good career centers teach students about the world of work, lead students through various career and personality assessments and train students on lifelong career management skills. If you are not in college, there are still a number of resources available to assist you.

Interestingly, some people are blind to their need for career assistance. They may believe that their degree or experience is enough. Some have connections that they are relying upon, including parents or friends. Unfortunately for them, their competition is getting prepared.

Perhaps some genius will come along and help us aggregate all this information in a useable format - a Social Media for Dummies hub. Wouldn't that be nice? Until then, some of us will continue to hop from Twitter, to LinkedIn, to Facebook, to Google+ just trying to keep up with change.

I have to admit, I chuckled a bit after reading Protect Your Privacy: My Facebook Lesson Learned.

Thankfully, when I was an undergrad, we didn't have such worries. But, I can only imagine if we had. Young adults do some pretty silly things when they're out with friends. Of course, these things are not meant for employers, but that is the danger nowadays. You never know who might be recording your antics or snapping pics. So, do yourself a favor and read the article. My guess is that Mr. Smith might just have saved these college students some future angst come career time.

Coffee Shop Etiquette

If you are like me, you might find it easier to work or study in a place where there's a degree of background noise. Perhaps it is because you don't feel tied to the task because you are part of the activity around you. Better yet, you don't feel like you are separate and locked away in a room while the world goes on outside. You are not missing anything.

One of my favorite places to study, write, or work is a coffee shop. Somehow, it is just more conducive to concentration than my office or any room at home. There are other people, but no other demands. My mind is safely sequestered in its activity and I don't feel isolated. Generally, no one interrupts my work because they are disinterested strangers. And, of course, the phone is not ringing and family is not making demands either. It is a time of high productivity.

What do you believe that you deserve? What job would be "fair" for someone of your experience, education, and skills? How much should you command in compensation?

Just this week, I spoke to an HR representative who relayed how new graduates often have an elevated view of their worth to companies. They don't believe that they should have to start at the bottom and feel that they deserve a salary greater than their actual worth. In reality, these new grads are positioning themselves for the unemployment line.

Each of us should take a moment for a reality check, especially when searching for a first job. It might be that a company has designed career paths to begin at the bottom so that the new employee can learn the business.

In addition, research the jobs that successful people have held during their careers. Take a moment to read The Humbling First Jobs of 25 Very Successful Celebrities and Business Leaders in HR World. In addition, read The Entitlement Trap in The Change Blog.

"An entitlement is a want that a person feels she has already earned. I have seen this as a hiring manager – students just out of college feel entitled to jobs because they have a degree. I have seen this in our economy – people who feel they deserve more money and less financial debt given the amount of years they have been in the workforce."

Virtual Interview Preparedness

Traditionally, companies would interview candidates face-to-face. But, with new interviewing technology and increased cost cutting, companies may moving more toward online interviews - at least for screening.

Companies like InterviewStream, Ovia, Hirevue and others offer alternatives to Skype where the candidates do not necessarily have to be online at the same time as interviewers, allowing even greater interviewing flexibility. Recruiters no longer have to incur travel costs or time away from the office.

As a job candidate, you should prepare yourself ahead of time for the possibility of a virtual interview. Did you know that Facebook has a Marketplace that has job listings? I didn't. Thanks to Heather Huhman and Cachinko for highlighting this fact in the June 30th webinar, How to Use Facebook In Your Job Search.

To access the marketplace, type "marketplace" in the search field and you will see the following page. Under the "Basic Information" box click the link "Start using Marketplace now." The jobs may not be of the same calibre that you might find on a job board or company website, but it doesn't hurt to look. You might even find something else that you like while you are there.

Careerealism has a good article out today about the BeKnown and BranchOut. Their advice to would-be users is:

The BeKnown and BranchOut Facebook apps have very similar abilities, but the designs are quite different. I think your best bet is to try both and see which one feels most user-friendly to you. Why? Because it doesn’t make sense to use both. As a career coach, I would rather see you pick one and use it consistently then spread yourself too thin by using both. These types of networking tools are only good if you actually use them – so the decision as to which one you find easier to use must be a priority in when choosing which one to invest your time in using.
